Private 4-Day Cairo and Alexandria Tour

This private 4-day Cairo and Alexandria tour combines Egypt’s principal archaeological sites around Cairo with a full-day journey to the Mediterranean coast. Explore the Giza Pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum, follow the development of pyramid architecture through Memphis, Saqqara and Dahshur, discover the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and historic Cairo, then travel north for the Greco-Roman and modern landmarks of Alexandria.

The itinerary is arranged as four consecutive guided sightseeing days from a Cairo or Giza hotel. It includes a private air-conditioned vehicle, a licensed Egyptologist guide, standard entrance fees to the listed attractions, lunch on all four days, bottled water and daily hotel pickup and return.

Accommodation clarification: the current package does not list hotel accommodation among its inclusions. Travelers should use their own Cairo or Giza hotel or request a separate quotation that adds three hotel nights and any required airport transfers.

Day 1: Giza Pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum

Begin at the Giza Plateau with the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the panoramic viewpoint, the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple area. Your Egyptologist explains how the pyramid, temples and causeways formed complete royal funerary complexes rather than isolated monuments.

Standard plateau admission is included. Entry inside the Great Pyramid or another open pyramid requires a separate optional ticket and remains subject to availability and site regulations. Before the visit, travelers can review the complete Giza Pyramids visitor guide.

After lunch, continue to the Grand Egyptian Museum. The visit follows the principal areas included with the confirmed ticket and current operating arrangements, which may include the Grand Hall, Grand Stairs, Main Galleries, Tutankhamun Galleries and Khufu’s Boats Museum.

GEM is extensive, so the guided visit focuses on selected highlights that connect with the monuments seen earlier at Giza. Our Grand Egyptian Museum visitor guide provides additional planning information about the museum layout and visitor experience.

Day 2: Memphis, Saqqara and Dahshur

The second day follows the development of royal architecture south of Cairo. Visit the archaeological area of Memphis, the ancient capital region traditionally connected with Egypt’s early unified state. Its open-air museum displays major royal sculptures and monuments, including works associated with Ramesses II and the well-known alabaster sphinx.

Continue to Saqqara for the Step Pyramid complex of King Djoser. The complex represents a decisive stage in the development from mastaba tombs toward monumental pyramid construction. Standard admission covers the areas included with the confirmed ticket, while special tombs, the Serapeum and premium archaeological zones may require separate tickets.

At Dahshur, see the Bent Pyramid and Red Pyramid of King Sneferu. Their changing angles and construction methods show the experimentation that preceded the later pyramids at Giza. The day provides a chronological bridge between Djoser’s Step Pyramid and the Fourth Dynasty complexes.

For deeper historical context, read the Saqqara and Memphis day-trip guide.

Day 3: Egyptian Museum, Old Cairo, Citadel and Khan El Khalili

Begin at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square. This is the historic museum in central Cairo, not the Grand Egyptian Museum visited on day one. Its galleries cover a broad timeline of ancient Egyptian history and include royal statuary, funerary objects, jewelry, coffins, papyri and collections from multiple archaeological sites.

A guided highlights route may include the famous diorite statue of Khafre, objects associated with Psusennes I, the collections of Yuya and Thuya and works from the Amarna Period. Displayed objects and gallery access can change because of conservation and museum operations.

Continue to Old Cairo to visit the Hanging Church and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, with the Ben Ezra Synagogue area included according to access conditions. The Coptic Cairo visitor guide explains the history and practical differences between these sites.

At the Citadel of Saladin, visit the Mosque of Muhammad Ali and enjoy elevated views across Cairo. Finish at Khan El Khalili, the historic market district within Islamic Cairo. Travelers can prepare with the Khan El Khalili shopping and sightseeing guide.

Day 4: Alexandria from Cairo

Depart early for the road journey from Cairo to Alexandria. Exact driving time depends on traffic, rest stops and the hotel location. The sightseeing route combines Roman archaeology, the modern library and the city’s Mediterranean waterfront.

Visit the Roman Theater at Kom el-Dikka, then continue to the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, whose decoration combines Egyptian, Greek and Roman traditions. At the Serapeum archaeological area, see the granite column commonly called Pompey’s Pillar, erected in honor of the Roman emperor Diocletian.

Continue to Bibliotheca Alexandrina according to its opening schedule and the access included with the confirmed ticket. The modern library commemorates Alexandria’s intellectual heritage but is a contemporary institution rather than a reconstruction of the ancient library.

After a seafood lunch, visit Qaitbay Citadel on the eastern harbor. The fifteenth-century fortress stands at the former Pharos area, where the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria once marked the Mediterranean entrance to the city. Return to Cairo at the end of the day.

Why This Four-Day Route Works

The itinerary separates Cairo into three different historical themes before adding Alexandria:

  • Day 1: Giza’s royal pyramid complexes and GEM’s national collections.
  • Day 2: The development of pyramids through Memphis, Saqqara and Dahshur.
  • Day 3: The Egyptian Museum, Christian heritage, Islamic Cairo and the historic bazaar.
  • Day 4: Alexandria’s Greco-Roman archaeology and Mediterranean identity.

This structure limits unnecessary repetition while giving first-time visitors a broad introduction to ancient, Coptic, Islamic, modern and Mediterranean Egypt.

Who Is This Tour Best For?

The tour is suitable for couples, families, solo travelers and small private groups who already have accommodation in Cairo or Giza and want four organized sightseeing days. It is especially useful for travelers who want Alexandria without changing hotels or arranging a separate intercity tour.

Visitors with less time can compare the private Cairo 3-day tour. Travelers who want a longer Cairo-only program without the Alexandria drive can consider the 5 Days to Discover Cairo itinerary.

What Is Not Included?

Hotel accommodation, international flights, Egypt entry visas and airport transfers are not included unless written into the final quotation. Optional pyramid interiors, premium Saqqara tickets, special museum experiences and activities outside the listed program also cost extra.

Practical Booking Notes
